Royal Ballet shown live in Exchange Square
30/05/2006
Exchange Square, Manchester, will open its BP Summer Big Screens season with a showing of the Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty.
On Thursday June 1st, the city-centre square will show the first of three giant-screen performances that will take place over the summer.
In addition, a line-up of local classical artists will provide pre-show entertainment, including electric violin duo Virtuoso Springs.
Fresh coffee, pizza and pancakes will be available to visitors, but they are also encouraged to bring their own picnics.
Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure, councillor Mark Hackett, said: "These public screenings of the Royal Opera House performances bring a vibrancy to Manchester's public open spaces on summer evenings."
He added that they are "a delightful way for shoppers, workers and families to spend time relaxing in the city centre".
Sleeping Beauty begins at 19:30 BST but events kick off around 17:30 BST.
The performance starts Manchester's summer live events programme, which includes Feast - the picnic by the lake, in Platt Fields Park, on June 17th and the Exodus arts festival, at Hulme Park, on June 24th.
