Sainsbury's to offer GP appointments
24/02/2008
A Sainsbury's store in Heaton Park, Manchester, is to be the first supermarket in England to offer GP services to customers.
Doctors from three local surgeries will work at a consulting room in the supermarket from March 3rd, offering daytime and evening appointments.
The clinic will be managed by private company Doctors in Store during the £126,000 six-month pilot by the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust.
Dr Mohammed Jiva, manager of Doctors in Store, said: "Patients' needs are changing and so it's important that we find ways to provide a more flexible and convenient service.
"A number of practices in the local area have already come on board and once demand increases, we will explore the potential to roll this out to even further across the whole of Rochdale."
Patients can book appointments through their regular GP surgery. The Sainsbury's consulting room will be open between 18:30 and 21:00 on Monday and Thursday and between 11:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays.
According to the Times, Asda is considering a similar move.
