Salford Central gets glass facelift

Engineers have started to install 500 sq m of glass at Salford Central railway station as part of a £5 million revamp.

The renovation, which is due to be finished by Christmas, also includes customer information screens and a public address system, a new ticket office, disabled access and CCTV.

It is part of a wider regeneration of central Salford, which has seen more than £100 million invested in projects at the People's History Museum, the Lowry Hotel, Chapel Wharf and the repainting of the railway arches that are the gateway between the cities of Salford and Manchester.

Roger Jones, chair of the passenger transport authority, said: "Salford Central has been hidden away on the border between Manchester and Salford for decades. I'm pleased that the station is now being brought back into the limelight.

"I'm sure this £5 million investment will help to boost the local economy and encourage more people to use public transport."

The station opened in 1838 as a terminus on the Bolton and Manchester line. A connection to Manchester Victoria was built in five years later.
