Salford City Reds stadium given the go-ahead
03/11/2006
A brand new stadium for Salford City Reds rugby team is to be built, it has emerged.
The new stadium, which will have a capacity of 22,000, is to be built near the Manchester Ship Canal at Barton. The development will include a shopping mall, a casino and a four-star hotel.
Although Salford City Council approved the scheme last year, the government held up the project due to concerns about its size. However, following a public inquiry, the stadium has been given the go-ahead.
Councillor Derek Antrobus said: "This decision is a huge boost for the city and we are delighted for the club and its supporters who have all waited for this day with so much anticipation.
"Now the detailed work will begin on delivering a world-class, 21st century sports facility for a 21st century city."
New Salford City Reds signing Michael Korkidas has told the Salford Advertiser that the team is in a position to win a major trophy within the next three years.
