Salford bid ahead of Manchester for BBC move
15/06/2006
BBC governors have named Salford as the front runner as the site for its proposed relocation.
Many of the BBC's London-based operations are expected to be moved to either Salford Quays or a site near Whitworth Street in central Manchester.
However, this is not a final decision, as the move depends on several outstanding issues being resolved.
In the meantime, Salford is to be treated as the leading bidder exclusively, providing the issues can be sorted within a set time period.
The current BBC site at Oxford Road is to close, with the new base scheduled to open in four years time.
Other media outlets are to be invited to move into the chosen area to set up a "media zone" in Greater Manchester.
BBC Sport, Radio Five Live, New Media, Research and Development and CBBC would relocate from the capital if the move does take place.
