Salford chosen as BBC's preferred bidder
05/07/2006
The BBC could be moving its northern offices to Salford Quays, it has been announced.
Salford MediaCity:UK has been chosen as the preferred venue when the corporation moves many of its offices to the north by 2010.
The BBC's northern base, which will incorporate the company's sport and children's channels, as well as Radio Five Live, would be part of a more general media zone at Salford Quays, injecting an expected £1.5 billion into the local economy.
A statement released by the BBC board said: "After thorough consideration of the outcome of the BBC North Project's discussions we are satisfied that the outstanding issues we raised have been resolved.
"We have now given approval for BBC management to treat the Salford consortium as the preferred bidder and have asked for work to continue to refine the proposal."
It added that the "final decision will be based on two key factors", which include value for money for licence-payers and affordability.
Governors at the BBC made their decision to treat Salford as the lead bidder ahead of another proposed site in Whitworth Street, central Manchester.
