Salford fire sparks investigation
14/08/2006
A huge blaze broke out in Salford on Sunday, after a tanker exploded at an industrial unit on Seaford Road.
Around 50 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze, which broke out at around 15:00 BST, sending clouds of black smoke 100 feet up into the air.
The police also reported a number of small explosions within the building, but there were no injuries reported.
Around 150 people were evacuated from their homes nearby and police were warning people to avoid the Pendleton area on Sunday evening.
An exclusion zone remains in place today, as there have been reports of acetylene cylinders inside the premises.
Graham Brennan, of Greater Manchester Fire Service, said: "We are working on a safety first basis - obviously the safety of our crews and local residents is a priority."
A police spokesperson told the BBC: "A joint investigation with the fire service is currently under way to establish the full circumstances of the blaze."
