Salford in bid to modernise elderly mental health care
08/11/2006
Salford City Council is launching a public consultation over proposals to change the way that mental health care is delivered to local elderly residents.
According to the council, elderly mental health patients have expressed that they wish to live either at home or as close as possible to it and the council's plans have been developed with this in mind.
One proposal includes the provision of a centre of excellence in Swinton. This would offer patients and carers a range of services and resources on a day basis while allowing them to return home at night.
Under the plans there would also be a pair of integrated mental health teams to provide services across the city.
Salford City Councillor Eddie Sheehy said: "It's vital that we modernise our services to enable people to live as independently as possible, retain the skills they have and provide them with appropriate and meaningful support."
A recent NHS Healthcare Commission survey of more than 19,000 people nationwide found that Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health Trust was rated with an overall good rating, scoring 70 out of 100.
