Salford lose to Manchester in Two Cities Boat Race

16/05/2007

Despite training hard to win this year's Two Cities Boat Race, the University of Salford once again lost to Manchester, although it was head-to-head for much of the event.

Manchester won 4 - 3 in the 36th annual rowing event, which took place over the 500-metre course at Salford Quays, starting at Sam Platt's Pub and finishing under Lowry Bridge.

Hundreds of spectators, including local MP and Labour Party chair Hazel Blears, lined the banks of the quays to watch the seven-race regatta.

Michelle Bryant, on behalf of Salford, said: "The event was truly nail-biting until the very last race. Our team had worked hard and, with Manchester behind at one stage, we were definitely up for the challenge.

"Hopefully next year we'll get our revenge."

The Two Cities Boat Race raised money for Sparks, the children's medical research charity, which uses sport to help seriously-ill youngsters.

Salford can take heart from the fact that although they lost this year, it was not a repeat of 2006 when Manchester won 6 -1.
