Salford parking attendants to take part in video camera pilot
23/05/2007
Traffic wardens in Salford have been told they can strap video AA battery-sized video cameras to their headgear to record their work.
NCP Services hopes that the pilot scheme will help resolve disputes over the issuing of tickets and provide evidence if an attendant is assaulted or abused by a motorist.
If the trial is successful in Salford, then the initiative could be rolled-out by councils across the country.
James Pritchard, communications manager at NCP Services, said: "The cameras will be crucial in gathering evidence on the circumstances of why a fixed penalty has been issued.
"In many disputes it can often boil down to one person's word against another. We will now have the video evidence to help clear up any doubts."
Under extended powers, traffic wardens will also be able to issue tickets for anti-social activities such as dog fouling, fly-posting and littering.
The city council is responsible for all aspects of parking in Salford, including the caretaking of pay and display car parks and the enforcement of parking regulations under the Road Traffic Act 1991.
