Salford people to 'enjoy' lowest council tax rise
22/02/2008
Salford residents are being told that council tax rises for this year will be among the small increases in the country.
Council tax in the city will rise by an average of 3.4 per cent or 61 pence a week, which means the average household will now pay £978 a year.
The overall increase covers a three per cent increase for city council services, a 3.5 per cent increase for the fire service and a 7.5 per cent increase for police services.
Councillor Bill Hinds said: "We appreciate that nobody likes seeing an increase in their bills and that's why each year we endeavour to keep any council tax rise to a minimum.
"It has been a challenge this year with the tough settlement the government has imposed on us, but we're confident that we can maintain and improve the hundreds of services and activities that we provide."
The extra money will help fund six new police officers dedicated to neighbourhood policing in Salford.
According to the Audit Commission, the government's spending watchdog, Salford residents are getting a good, value-for-money service that is continuing to improve.
