Salford researcher acquires arthritis funding
22/08/2006
A researcher at the University of Salford who has been studying rheumatoid arthritis of the foot has received a £30,000 grant that could help sufferers across Europe, it has emerged.
Anita Williams, who studies at the university's school of health care professions, has been given the grant by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR).
Ms Williams, who has set up a clinic at Hope Hospital, will use the funding to research how sufferers respond to specialist footwear and intends to create research sites in Holland, the UK and Spain.
She said: "I'm so pleased to have received this grant as I was up against fierce competition from internationally recognised teams.
"Approximately one per cent of the population of the UK suffer from rheumatoid arthritis so anything that can improve their quality of life has to be worthwhile."
EULAR represents patients, health professionals and scientific societies of rheumatology across Europe.
The league says that it "promotes the translation of research advances into daily care and fights for the recognition of the needs of people with musculoskeletal diseases by the governing bodies in Europe".
