Salford unemployment charity appeals for help
27/07/2007
A Salford charity is looking for unwanted cars for its scheme to help people who have been unemployed in the long-term get back into the jobs market.
The First Step charity recycles old or unwanted vehicles as part of its SMaRT (Socially Minded and Responsible Trading) project, by using them to teach its unemployed clients a range of mechanical skills, from stripping an engine to vehicle repairs.
The project also runs a vehicle service centre which is open to the public and sells any car which can be made roadworthy or the parts from it which can be repaired.
Any profits made by the scheme are reinvested in training and development.
Stuart Owen, regional director, of First Step, said: "I would urge anyone who is thinking of scrapping a vehicle to think about giving it to charity instead.
"We can still make a cash offer, and we'll collect it free of charge if you live in the Greater Manchester area.
"By donating it to us you will help make a real difference to the lives of some of the most disadvantaged people in Greater Manchester."
SMaRT was launched in early 2006 to collect abandoned cars to try and prevent anti-social behaviour and the garage was established a few months later.
