Security teams to patrol Metrolink

A new scheme designed to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve passenger safety on Greater Manchester's Metrolink system has been launched.

Four teams of public safety officers have been hired by transport chiefs to patrol the light rail network until the last service at night.

The teams from Carlisle Security will walk the beat on all Metrolink lines, stops and car parks and will work in partnership with Greater Manchester Police.

Councillor Roger Jones, chair of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: "We want to persuade many more people to use public transport. I hope the new security team will help to reassure them that they'll be safe.

"This is the first time we've hired a team to patrol the system at all times of the day, seven days a week."

Worn-out Metrolink tram lines between Altrincham and Bury are to be replaced next summer in a project likely to cost £102 million.
