Siemens park and ride scheme gets go-ahead
04/09/2006
Greater Manchester transport chiefs have given the green light for a repeat of the Christmas park and ride scheme at Siemens in West Didsbury.
The initiative, which has been operational for the last three Christmases, was approved by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority's policy committee.
It means that in the run-up to Christmas, weekend shoppers can leave their cars at the Siemens car park in Princess Parkway and travel on a shuttle bus into the city centre.
A return ticket will cost will £2, according to the Greater Manchester Public Transport Executive.
A councillor at Manchester City Council, Andrew Fender, commented: "Figures show that over 5,000 people used the scheme last year a six per cent increase on 2004.
"The run-up to Christmas is a busy time and many drivers appreciate the convenient option of a quick shuttle bus journey into the city centre."
In the transport authority's report for resolution in July, Siemens was noted for its "continued and exceptional co-operation" and was thanked for contributing to the scheme's success.
