Sir Richard expresses regret over lack of Man U parade
30/05/2008
Manchester City Council Sir Richard Leese has said he regrets that Manchester United FC did not have a victory parade following its cup win in Moscow.
He said all fans, especially those who were unable to go to the Russian capital, should have had the opportunity to celebrate this "remarkable achievement".
Sir Richard was speaking on channel m's News Live after the team won their third European Cup against Chelsea.
However, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) insisted there could be no homecoming parade.
"A parade is really the best way of doing that because it's something everybody is involved in," said Sir Richard.
He said the city of Manchester "should be capable" of organising a parade, especially when the neighbouring borough of Stockport had managed one.
"All the parties involved need to make sure we are never in this situation again. We need to make sure we've got very clear agreed protocols that when we have sporting achievements of this significance we all know what we're going to and what our parts are."
The failure to hold a parade came after the GMP came under attack from rioting Rangers FC fans, which left the city streets under a pile of rubbish and broken glass.
