Small earthquake shakes Manchester
10/08/2007
Manchester has been shaken by an earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale.
At 11:50 BST, the earthquake struck the city centre, as well as the south and the east of Greater Manchester.
"We have received a number of reports of disturbances from Manchester city centre, Stockport and Didsbury," said a British Geological survey spokesman.
There have been no reports of personal injury or damage to property following the earthquake, according to the Greater Manchester Fire Service.
Ernest Rutter, professor of structural geology at the University of Manchester told the BBC: "It's a very small tremor, right on the edge of being felt, although obviously quite a lot of people did.
"You can't tell if a little earthquake is going to turn into a bigger earthquake and you can't tell how frequently they are going to occur."
Manchester was hit by a 'swarm' of tremors five years ago, one of which measured 3.9 on the Richter scale.
According to geologists, there were over 100 small earthquakes in Manchester between October 2002 and January 2003.
