Sony apologies over Manchester Cathedral gaffe
06/07/2007
Entertainment firm Sony has issued an "unreserved" apology to Manchester Cathedral over its use as the backdrop to a violent video game.
Last month, a row broke out when the Church of England realised that the 800-year-old building had been used as a virtual background for a bloody alien gun battle in Resistance - Fall of Man.
Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, the Bishop of Manchester, spoke out and said that given Manchester's history of gun crime, Sony was particularly irresponsible in choosing the city.
Dr David Reeves, president of Sony Europe, said: "It is clear to us that the connection between the congregation and the cathedral is a deeply personal and spiritual one.
"We would like to apologise unreservedly to them for causing that offence and to all parts of the community who we might also have offended."
Another point of contention is whether Sony obtained permission to use the interior of the building.
But the entertainment giant said it believes it "sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game".
Resistance - Fall of Man has already sold more than one million copies in the UK and the US.
