Sportcity to receive £10m investment
27/02/2008
Sportcity in Manchester has been given a £10 million boost, which will help "unlock huge sporting potential" in the eastern part of the city, according to communities secretary Hazel Blears.
Voltimum reports Ms Blears as saying that new jobs will be created as part of the redevelopment in the area, while she also described the move as "another piece of the jigsaw in Manchester's regeneration success story".
Ideas put forward for the site include a scuba pool, abseiling facilities and snowboarding half pipe resources. It is estimated that some 1,600 jobs will be created by the changes at Sportcity.
A new ministerial group, chaired by Ms Blears herself, will also be established to give city leaders support when bidding for new projects.
Sportcity provided the venue for many of the events during the Commonwealth Games in 2002.
Currently, the area incorporates Manchester City Football Club's stadium, a national cycling centre and squash facilities, among other sporting venues.
