Station renewal 'signals the transformation of Salford'
09/02/2007
The foundations of the new-look Salford Central Station are now being laid – a process witnessed by transport chiefs in Greater Manchester on Wednesday.
Part of the urban regeneration of central Salford and Chapel Street, the £5 million transformation includes demolishing part of the station, and adding a new glass front and ticket office.
A section of the railway bridge outside the station, which forms the gateway between Manchester and Salford, has already been repainted and restored to its former glory.
Transport bosses want the station to be a symbol of central Salford's 21st century regeneration, which include new Chapel Street apartments, the Lowry Hotel and the forthcoming Media City at the Quays.
Greater Manchester Public Transport Authority chief Roger Jones said: "This is the first phase of what we hope will be a complete transformation of Salford Central.
"[It will] be a major boost for the economies in both Manchester and Salford. I'm sure it will encourage more people to use public transport."
The work on the station coincides with the announcement that congestion charging could be coming to Greater Manchester, which has prompted many to express concern about the state of the city-region's public transport system.
