Stockport revels in tourism boom
18/01/2008
A growing number of people are visiting Stockport for a day out or for a holiday, new figures have shown.
According to Stockport Council, eight million tourists came to the south Manchester borough in 2006, a three per cent increase on 2005.
Visitors to Stockport spent £318 million in 2006, compared with £310 million in the previous 12 months.
Councillor Sue Derbyshire said: "There has never been a more important time to invest in our tourism [sector].
"With ongoing co-operation between the public and private sectors I expect Stockport will continue to thrive and build on its visitor attractions."
Stockport's tourism industry is one of the borough's fastest-growing sectors and supports 5,000 jobs.
The figures were released as work starts on a £1.7 million conservation project to restore Stockport's historic market hall, which is a Grade II-listed Victorian building.
