Stockport school investigates "cripple" allegation
05/01/2007
A Greater Manchester school is carrying out an internal investigation after a disabled girl claimed she was referred to as a "cripple" by a male teacher.
The 14-year-old pupil, who studies at Reddish Vale Technology College in Stockport, has said that the teacher in question said "move, cripple", as he passed her in the dining hall.
An official complaint has been lodged by the girl's mother and the college is currently addressing the allegation with the teacher.
Jenny Campbell, headteacher at the school, said: "The college is addressing the allegation with the member of staff involved through its established procedures.
"We have unreservedly apologised in person for any distress caused to the student and her family."
According to the Stockport Express, the girl's mother said a meeting at the college was going well until the teacher stated he made the derogatory comment in jest.
The schoolgirl has mobility problems because major heart surgery complications left her with damaged nerves in her legs. She now has to rely on crutches and a wheelchair and makes visits to the hospital regularly.
