Stockport to air its views in new congestion charge poll
03/07/2007
Stockport residents are to be consulted over public transport funding proposals and a road charging scheme, in a new study commissioned by the borough council.
Although a public consultation is already taking place across Greater Manchester, Stockport will be able to voice its support or concerns in a separate poll carried out by Bostock Marketing Group.
Over the next two weeks, 1,000 residents and 100 businesses will be asked to take part in a telephone interview regarding congestion charging and public transport funding.
Council leader Dave Goddard said: "We're going to ask Stockport's own residents and businesses what they think about the plans for transport investment and congestion charging.
"The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (Agma) research is consulting with only 500 Stockport residents and we felt very strongly that this didn't give enough people a chance to have their say."
Stockport council has said that it is unable to make an informed decision about whether or not to support the city-region's transport plans until local people have aired their views.
It also wants to see "clear confirmation" of funding for Stockport and a firm commitment to public transport schemes that include expansion of the Metrolink.
Agma has always maintained that the problem of road congestion needs to be tackled sooner rather than later if the city-region is to narrow the gap with London and stimulate employment growth.
