Study: US cities could learn a lot from Manchester
13/06/2008
A new report has suggested that US policymakers could learn lot to learn from UK cities like Manchester.
According to the joint study by the Centre for Cities and Washington's Brookings Institution, US mayors should look at Manchester for policy and regeneration ideas.
It points out that Manchester has experienced a renaissance over the past ten years, with large scale investment transforming the city centre.
Moreover, population growth in Manchester, following a decline in the 1990s, has been described as "quite impressive" compared to some US cities.
Dermot Finch, director of the Centre for Cities, said: "National leaders, from Michael Heseltine to Gordon Brown, have given UK cities their high-profile attention.
"These champions have helped cities like Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds transform themselves in recent decades."
On his blog, Mr Finch said a Manchester congestion charge could offer a useful template for US cities, which also suffer from bad congestion.
