Supercasino plans under review

Manchester's hopes of building a supercasino now hang in the balance after the new prime minister said there needs to be a rethink.

Gordon Brown has announced a review of supercasinos and gambling in general, which will be completed in September.

He also said that the government will examine if there are ways of regenerating an area other than building a supercasino.

Earlier this year, the House of Lords refused to endorse the government's gambling package, despite a majority vote in the Commons.

Mr Brown said: "It is true to say that this is an issue on which there is no consensus found within the two houses of parliament.

"I hope that during the summer months we can look at whether regeneration in the areas that wanted supercasinos may be a better way of meeting their economic and social needs than the creation of supercasinos."

This marks a significant change in policy since Tony Blair left office. Not long before he left Downing Street, he told MPs that he could think of no reason why both Manchester and Blackpool could not have a supercasino.
