Suspects arrested in Manchester terror raids
24/01/2007
Three men have been arrested in Manchester on suspicion of supporting and facilitating terrorism, according to reports.
A statement from Greater Manchester Police announced that three men have been arrested today (January 23rd), two 24-year-old males in the Cheetham Hill area of the city and one 32-year-old male in Longsight.
Four addresses in Manchester are now being searched by police, while forces in West Yorkshire are searching four addresses in Halifax after two men were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 in unrelated raids carried out today.
A police spokeswoman said of the arrests in Manchester: "At this stage, there is no intelligence of any planned terrorist activity in the UK and the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation."
The north-west raids could be connected to the disappearance earlier this month of a 26-year-old Manchester man who was subject to a control order and is thought to have fled overseas.
More than 1,000 people have been arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 since September 2001, according to Bloomberg.
