Teenage boy held after sister is shot in Gorton
01/05/2007
Greater Manchester Police are holding a teenage boy after his 12-year-old sister was shot in the head, it has emerged.
Police and paramedics were called to an address on a Gorton council estate yesterday evening, where it was discovered that a girl has a gunshot wound to the head.
She was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary and is in a critical condition. Her 17-year-old brother has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
It is understood he will be questioned about the shooting this morning.
A police spokeswoman said: "Shortly after 19:30 BST police were called to Wembley Road in Gorton following reports that a person had been shot.
"Police and ambulance crews attended and a 12-year-old girl was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary suffering from a gunshot wound to the head."
The incident comes days after Manchester anti-gun organisation Carisma was nominated for a Queen's Award for helping to reduce gun and gang-related crime in the city.
