Music in the north-west, including the cities of Manchester and Liverpool, is thriving, a new survey has revealed.
According to research from internet portal Yahoo Music, the region has produced more hits than any other region since 2000.
The survey indicated that musical artists such as Oasis, the Doves and Morrissey, all from the Greater Manchester area, had helped the region achieve a number one hit for every 115,254 people.
The Gallagher brothers' band Oasis has achieved the most north-west number-one hits during the period, with 12 per cent of the total.
Findings show that Greater London recorded one hit per 216,647 people and the south-east had one for every 253,125 individuals.
Shannon Ferguson, managing director of Yahoo Music Europe, told the Independent: "Manchester and Liverpool have a great tradition of fostering musical talent, but I was surprised by these results. I thought it might be more evenly distributed."
