Trafford NHS staff face uncertain future
19/02/2008
More than 200 employees who work for Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust face uncertain futures because of a multi-million pound deficit.
A predicted £7 million black hole in this year's finances means that 210 posts could be sacrificed, while the closure of two wards and two operating theatres are in the pipeline.
Health bosses at the trusts say that they hope to avoid redundancies by transferring people to other jobs. Unison has said it will challenge any forced redundancies.
"The trust has had cash problems over the last few years that, if left, would build up into major financial problems this year," said interim chief executive Steve Spoerry.
"We cannot allow this to happen and are taking responsible steps to avoid a major cash deficit."
The trust provides healthcare services at Trafford, Altrincham and Stretford Memorial hospitals.
Last week, the neo-natal unit at Salford Royal Hospital was temporarily closed to premature baby admissions after concerns were raised about the possible presence of a potentially fatal fungus infection.
