Transport chiefs explore high-speed rail to London and Birmingham

14/04/2008

A high-speed rail link between England's three biggest cities has been cited as a distinct possibility.

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) and similar organisations are exploring the potential for a service that runs from Manchester to Birmingham and London.

If the plan bears fruit, it means passengers could travel from Manchester to London in just 90 minutes.

Councillor Allen Brett, vice chair of GMPTA, said: "High-speed rail has the potential to bring massive economic and environmental benefits on a national scale.

"Although this high-speed rail connection is still a long way from becoming a reality - at least 15 years - now is the right time to take the concept to the next stage."

The results of the study, which will assess funding and technical requirements, will be submitted to the government by April 2009.

Meanwhile, a separate study by Mersey Partnership and London-based UK Ultraspeed is examining the possibility of a 300 mph rail link between Manchester and London.
