'Typical Mancunian' photos displayed at Central Library

04/01/2008

Images of the "average" male and female Manchester citizen are being exhibited at Manchester Central Library.

Manchester-based genetics company Nowgen has taken hundreds of photographs of Mancunians before merging them to create a series of "typical" portraits.

Five portraits, representing the average Manchester male and female, as well as the average Manchester United fan, Manchester City fan and bingo player, are on display until January 12th.

Professor Dian Donnai, executive director of Nowgen, said: "This project challenges the assumptions people make about the faces around them.

"By creating images of the average Mancunian we can encourage people to explore the genetic, cultural and social aspects of the human face."

The Nowgen Centre was completed in January 2005 and is situated near the University of Manchester.
