Unique biocentre opens in Manchester
25/10/2006
The first purpose-built biocentre research facility in the UK is being opened today in Manchester.
The £38 million Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre will enable biologists, chemists, mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists to work together in interdisciplinary research teams.
It is hoped that over 600 scientists and staff will pioneer innovative ideas in the field of biology, including finding new therapies for cancer, meningitis, cystic fibrosis and malaria.
More than 40 per cent of the world's population live in areas where malaria is transmitted, according to the department of health in the USA.
"The idea behind the institute is to create a new type of research environment where people from different disciplines learn to speak each other's language," said Professor John McCarthy.
"Most biology is still predominantly a qualitative, descriptive science; our aim is to apply analytical tools and theoretical rigour from the physical sciences, maths and engineering to bioscience research."
Sir Keith O'Nions, director general of the Research Councils UK, is a guest speaker at the launch.
