University appeals to future midwives
24/07/2006
Sixth-formers in the Manchester area have received invites to the University of Manchester to look into the world of midwifery.
A total of 40 students from 11 of Manchester's schools and colleges, will attend courses at the institution in an aim to get more school-leavers into further education.
The courses will include interactive workshops, where students can gather a better understanding of the stages of pregnancies with regard to the midwife's role.
Carol Porteous, admissions tutor for the midwifery degree course at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, said: "I will not only be explaining the role of the midwife to the students but also the qualities we look for in applicants - a team worker who is also able to work independently, who is kind, understanding and willing to develop new skills.
"They must also be able to articulate why they want to be a midwife and demonstrate some understanding of the role."
The scheme is part of the university's Widening Participation programme, which aims to make its course recruitment process as diverse as possible.
