University receives medical financial boost
29/06/2006
The University of Manchester has gained three awards for its School of Medicine.
Totalling £750,000, as well as the consequent funding matched by the appropriate NHS Trust, the Clinical Senior Lectureship Awards will enable a trio of Manchester lecturers to enhance their research profiles and continue to distribute high-quality teaching.
Dr Nusrat Husain of the Division of Psychiatry, Dr Paul Kingston of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Dr Andrew Renehan of the Division of Cancer Studies all received accreditation from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
Dr Kingston said: "I'm immensely pleased to have been awarded one of the first HEFCE Clinical Senior Lectureships, as it a vindication of the time and effort that I, my mentors and my colleagues have invested in the development of my research career to this point.
"The award will allow me the long-term opportunity to pursue my research from the lab into the clinical setting, which has been my ambition since the start of my academic career."
The awards were part of the government's Integrated Academic Training Pathway, which will see the HEFCE and the Department of Health provide £100 million during the next five years to fund clinical academics' research and teaching activities.
