We never misled councils about road toll, says transport boss
18/04/2007
The chairman of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) has stressed that councillors have not been misled about plans to introduce road charging in the city-region.
Councillor Roger Jones has tried to reassure Stockport, Rochdale and Trafford councils that they are not expected to support the introduction of an "unspecified" congestion charge.
Despite initially supporting the scheme, the three councils have said they were misled about proposals to charge motorists on 15 major traffic corridors.
Mr Jones told the Stockport Express that the only decision taken so far has been to investigate the possible role that charging might play as part of a wider local transport investment initiative designed to support the economic growth of the city.
"This is a decision that was taken by the leaders of all ten Greater Manchester councils," Mr Jones stressed.
"Investigations are still underway and we will not be taking any further decisions until this work has been completed in late May. All ten leaders were made aware of this position at a meeting last month."
According to the GMPTA, motorists who drive on the most congested roads at the busiest times would have to pay the most per mile, while off-peak motorists would be charged less or nothing at all.
