Widened M60 to reopen today
22/06/2006
A section of Greater Manchester motorway that carries 116,000 vehicles each day is due to be reopened today.
The bottleneck area of the M60 between Northenden and Stretford, which has been subject to a three-year widening project, will be opened today by roads minister Stephen Ladyman.
Extra lanes have been added to the road to help ease congestion and increase safety at one of Manchester's busiest traffic areas.
Work on the 4.5 mile stretch of motorway between junction five and eight has cost around £139.5 million since development began in July 2003.
In April, Highways Agency project manager Graham Dakin said that work was "on schedule for completion in May".
In related local travel news, the Mancunian Way will be closed in the eastbound direction tonight from 19:30 BST until 06:00 BST on Friday June 23rd.
The closure, from Egerton Street to Fairfield Street, is happening in order to move safety barriers that have been in place while work was conducted to strengthen the verge on the raised section of the road.
