Wigan woman in GMP promotion first
22/02/2007
A mother from Wigan has become the most highly promoted female officer in the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) force.
Justine Curran, 39, is the first woman in the GMP to rise to the rank of Assistant Chief Constable and could one day become the city-region's first female Chief Constable, reports the Wigan Observer.
After graduating from university, Ms Curran went on a three-day assessment with the GMP, who put her on an accelerated promotion scheme.
Further to gaining experience in Moss Side, Manchester city centre and Merseyside, she became Chief Superintendent and Divisional Commander for the North Manchester Division.
"It was while at university that the idea of joining the police took shape. I wanted an interesting job that wasn't going to be predictable every day," she told the paper.
"I have still got a minimum 12 years to do so if I do all right there might be more yet to come. But it is a bit early to be talking about that at the moment."
Ms Curran said that although she has encountered some sexist obstructions on the way up, she welcomes her promotion as a symbol of the progress of women in the police.
GMP is one of the largest provincial forces in the UK and employs 8,000 police officers.
