Work begins on Salford Central station
05/12/2006
Work to upgrade Salford Central railway station commenced yesterday.
The £5 million scheme will be a major overhaul of current facilities and should lead to regeneration of surrounding areas, according to the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE).
A new public address system, customer information screens and CCTV are all planned as part of the works.
The project is partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund, with Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Chair, Councillor Roger Jones keen to stress the potential it has to boost the economy.
Councillor Jones says: "The £5 million transformation of Salford Central will be a major boost for the economies in both Manchester and Salford.
"I'm sure it will encourage more people to use public transport to reach the regional centre."
Recently, a painting by Manchester artist LS Lowry sold for £530,000 at an auction, which is almost double the expected price.
Sold by the Fleming Collection, the money raised will be used to secure the future of the Scottish-owned works.
