Xmas markets deliver "huge" boost to Manchester economy
07/03/2008
Manchester's famous Christmas markets generated more than £42 million worth of business, more than double the figure for 2005, new data has shown.
According to city council figures, visitors to the European and traditional markets which were dotted around the city centre for most of November and December spent £42.6 million. This amount includes the money spent at shops, bars restaurants and hotels.
The figures also show that an average of 43,000 people a day visited the European market in Albert Square between November 15th and December 19th.
Councillor Eddy Newman said the findings demonstrate the "massive benefit" that the markets bring in terms of the "huge amount of money spent in the city".
"People come from far and wide to visit and shop at our Christmas markets, which have been going from strength to strength since they started ten years ago," he added.
Last year's Christmas markets were located in Albert Square, St Ann's Square, Exchange Street, Brazennose Street and New Cathedral Street.
