Zion centre to take part in People's Millions final
28/11/2007
The Zion Arts Centre on Stretford Road in Hulme is hoping to win a share of tonight's televised People's Millions competition run by The Big Lottery Fund and ITV.
It has made it to the regional final of the contest and is competing against a Liverpool cinema in a phone vote for the ultimate prize of £80,000.
The centre, which houses dance, music and radio studios and theatre and rehearsal space, needs the money to pay for upgrades and renovation.
Zion chief executive Carl Hutton told the BBC: "There have been plenty of young people who have gone on to make a career in the arts or develop some skills which have been of use to them in the future.
"By supporting the project, hundreds of young people would get the chance to participate in creative activities."
He said that even if the Zion does not win the phone vote on Granada Reports at 18:00 GMT it will at least benefit from the TV exposure.
As well as cultural offerings, the Zion also provides drug and sexual health advice, African and Caribbean mental health services and a women's drop-in.
