Albrechtsen packs in Baggies for relegated Rams
01/07/2008
West Bromwich Albion defender Martin Albrechtsen has declined a new contract with the club to sign for Derby County on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old has opted for Paul Jewell's side, despite the fact they will be plying their trade in the Championship next season.
Albrechtson was expected to play a part in the Baggies first team in their first year back in the Premier League next season, after playing 41 times in their Championship-winning side of 2007/08.
But he has opted to leave the club after making 138 appearances since joining from FC Copenhagen in June 2004.
West Brom manager Tony Mowbray said: "The era of Bosman means the incentives offered by clubs to out-of-contract players are often decisive in whether a player stays or leaves.
"I'd like to thank Martin for his contribution last season and wish him all the best in his new challenge.
"We will continue to push forward in our bid to find new faces to strengthen the squad for the season ahead."
