Arsenal to stick to their guns over transfers
27/05/2008
Arsenal have no plans to splash the cash on expensive transfers this summer, despite enduring a trophyless season, a club director has said.
Danny Fiszman told the club's official website that the Gunners "don't believe in the benefactor model" witnessed at Roman Abramovich's big-spending Chelsea.
Arsenal faded in all competitions last season despite setting the early pace.
But as Chelsea bid to bridge the gap between themselves and Manchester United, who beat them to the Premier League title and Champions League trophy, by seeking big name additions to the Stamford Bridge squad, Fiszman said Arsenal had no intention of adopting similar plans.
"It is not a question of a one-time infusion of cash to buy player X or player Y," he explained.
"You actually then have salaries that are connected to the players. What if they don't work out? Do you go and buy another two or three players? Is there any end to it?
"So I think everybody, including Chelsea, knows there are limits."
But Fiszman insisted the Arsenal hierarchy had imposed no transfer budget on manager Arsene Wenger.
"We have always supported Arsene," he said. "We have never said no to him and have no intention of saying no to him."
Fiszman added that the Frenchman was more interested in "big talent" rather than big names.
Arsenal have been heavily-linked in recent days with a move for Marseille starlet Samir Nasri, who would be a ready replacement for Inter Milan-bound Alexander Hleb.
