Ballack admits German nerves during Austria win
17/06/2008
Captain Michael Ballack has admitted Germany were "a little bit nervous" during their 1-0 victory over co-hosts Austria at Euro 2008.
The Germans needed a draw to guarantee their progress from the group stage of the European Championships for the first time since they won the competition in 1996.
But a frustrating first half was characterised by missed chances particularly from Germany striker Mario Gomez, who spooned the ball up in the air from just four yards out with an open goal in front of him.
Ballack, who eventually broke the deadlock four minutes after half-time with an unstoppable drive from distance, said he could feel the tension on the field but was pleased with the way the players reacted.
"We were a little bit nervous in front of the goal and maybe that's why Gomez missed," the Chelsea midfielder said.
"We might have missed that chance but we fought to the end."
Germany finished runners-up to Croatia in group B, meaning they will play group A winners Portugal in the quarter-finals.
