Barton admits FA charge of violent conduct

13/08/2008

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has admitted to an FA charge of violent conduct relating to his attack on former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Barton was missing from Newcastle's open day today and his absence was not talked about by club officials.

The Football Association (FA) later released a statement, which said: "Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has admitted a charge of violent conduct and requested a personal hearing.

"The charge relates to an incident involving Barton's then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo at City's Carrington training ground on 1st May 2007."

The 25-year-old could now be banned for the start of the Magpies' Premier League campaign and is also facing the prospect of a hefty fine.

There are no limits on how harshly the FA can sentence Barton but the midfielder is hoping that he will be able to make a case to lessen his punishment at the hearing.

Barton was only recently released from jail after serving 77 days of a six month sentence for assault and affray during a night out in Liverpool.

He received a four-month suspended sentence for causing actual bodily harm to Dabo but the FA now look likely to impose their own ban on Dabo over the incident.

During the attack Dabo sustained severe bruising and a cut to the face and had to go to hospital.

The FA have not yet set a date for the hearing to take place.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18731113-ADNFCR
