Boyd stuns Scotland by refusing to play under Burley
12/10/2008
Kris Boyd has revealed he does not want to play for Scotland under manager George Burley.
The Rangers striker claims he left a message on Burley's phone last night announcing his retirement after the Scotland boss said he must prove himself with his club.
Boyd was an unused substitute in the 0-0 draw with Norway at Hampden Park and called Burley when he heard the manager's comments.
The 25-year-old, who scored 25 goals for Rangers last season, has been a substitute in all six of Burley's games in charge.
"I left a message on George Burley's phone last night and he hadn't got back to me," Boyd told the BBC.
"I will not be playing for George Burley again, but I hope to be back in a Scotland jersey again one day."
In a post-match interview Burley said James McFadden and debutant Chris Iwelumo, who missed an open goal against Norway, were playing regular first-team football.
"Kris has got to establish himself in the Rangers team, which he hasn't done," Burley said.
"Chris (Iwelumo) came on because he's been playing regularly and has scored eight goals in six games for Wolves."
In a statement released after Boyd's decision to retire, Burley said he was disappointed the striker would not be available for the remaining World Cup qualifiers.
"I've spoken with Kris and he told me that he was disappointed not to play on Saturday or in the last couple of matches," Burley said.
"He said that he did not want to be considered for future Scotland squads so that he can concentrate on his club career.
"It is disappointing that he has chosen to do this at a crucial time in our World Cup campaign, but it is his decision to make and I will, of course, respect it."
Scotland lie second in Group Nine behind Holland with four points from three games.
