Briton Price knocks out Russian favourite
13/08/2008
Great Britain's super-heavyweight boxer David Price has progressed to the quarter-finals of the Olympic event after beating Russia's Islam Timurziev.
Price caused something of an upset as Timurziev, the current European amateur champion, was favourite for the gold medal heading into the Olympics.
The 25-year-old was behind on points after the first round but reeled off two sustained attacks in the second round which prompted the referee to stop the fight early.
Price caught Timurziev with a right-left combination and the referee gave Timurziev a standing eight count.
When they resumed boxing Price again breached Timurziev's defence, this time with a straight left, which caused the referee to intervene once more but at the end of the eight count he decided Timurziev could not continue.
The Russian was not pleased with the decision but Price was ecstatic to have defeated the favourite for the competition.
He said: "I still can't believe the way that happened. No one stops him, I'm made up. I'm delighted. That was the hardest fight on paper."
After rocking Timurziev with the first combination Price said he knew he had his man where he wanted him.
He added: "He committed with this right hand - and then I knew he was gone, that with one more punch he would be out."
Price will fight Lithuania's Jaroslav Jaksto in the quarter-finals on Monday.
