Carrick pens new United deal

18/05/2008

Midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a new four-year deal to stay with Manchester United.

Although the England man's contract was not about to expire, he joins Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown in committing his long-term future to the club.

The 27-year-old is now set to remain at Old Trafford until June 2012 and has cited his desire to win more trophies as the motivating factor behind his decision to stay.

He said: "This is a fantastic club and it is a pleasure to be part of this great squad.

"I believe this team will be together for many years to come and to win back to back titles in my first two seasons at the club is a dream come true."

Carrick joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for £18.1 million and has already made 100 appearances for the club in the two seasons since his move.

United manager Alex Ferguson says Carrick is an integral part of his squad and the Scot was pleased to have signed him on a long-term deal.

"I am delighted Michael has signed a new contract," said Ferguson.

"Michael has been outstanding since joining us from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 and it is great to know he will be a part of this squad for many years to come."

Carrick may not have to wait long to capture another trophy with United, as he could be holding a Champions League winners medal if they can overcome Chelsea on Wednesday.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18598492-ADNFCR
