Celtic slip to Villareal defeat
30/09/2008
Celtic miserable away record in the Champions League continued as they fell to a narrow defeat away to Villareal.
Gordan Strachan's side now face a mammoth task if they are to qualify for the last 16.
It was spirited Celtic display but they ultimately succumbed to a Marcos Senna free-kick in the 66th minute.
The Spanish international curled a beautiful shot over the wall and past Arthur Boruc in the Celtic goal.
It could have been different had substitute Scott McDonald's dipping volley gone the other side of the bar instead of landing on the roof of the net.
Georgios Samaras had missed a glorious opportunity shortly before half-time to give Celtic the lead.
Strachan's men were grateful to their goalkeeper Boruc who made a string of saves to keep them in the game.
Celtic now have a record of just one point from a possible 48 away from Celtic Park in their Champions League history.
They now face back-to-back games with man United which they must take something from if they're to emerge from the group.
