Charlton part ways with Pardew after slipping into drop zone
23/11/2008
Charlton Athletic have parted with manager Alan Pardew by mutual consent after the south London club slipped into the Championship relegation zone.
Pardew's final game in charge was a 5-2 defeat to Sheffield United at The Valley and was the side's eighth game without a win.
Pardew took over from Les Reed in December 2006 but could not keep them in the Premier League. Since then he has failed to guide the Addicks to the top of the Championship.
With signs that the club could be bound for League One rather than the top flight chairman Richard Murray said the club had to act swiftly.
The club announced that although Pardew was leaving the club with immediate effect that decision had been reached by both parties.
Murray said: "On reflection of results so far this season, and looking at the future challenges for the remainder of the campaign, it was agreed by both parties that Alan would leave the club with immediate effect."
Fans had been questioning Pardew's position at the club for some time and protested against him after their latest defeat.
Assistant manager Phil Parkinson is set to take charge against Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday night.
Charlton are currently third from bottom in the Championship table having taken 16 points from their 18 games this season.
