China's gymnasts wow crowds with gold
12/08/2008
China has won the men's team gymnastics gold after beating reigning champions Japan into second place.
In front of adoring crowds the home favourites regained the title they won in 2000 by winning five of the six apparatus.
China's coach Huang Yubin said his team of Zou Kai on floor; Qin Xiao on pommel horse; Chen Yibing and Yang Wei on rings; Li Xiaopeng on vault and high bar; and Huang Xu on parallel bars had put in a "perfect" display.
The Chinese team, which finished on 286.125 points, had trailed behind USA at the halfway stage.
Injuries had forced six Olympic debutants to make up the American team, but they held off a late German challenge to hold on to claim the bronze.
